AUTONOMOUS ENGLISH ENHANCEMENT BY LISTENING PRACTICE

When learning a foreign language one of the most complicated aspects is improving our listening skills. The problem is that we don’t know how to work autonomously: how to create activities, and how to listen. For that purpose, we should take into account materials, inputs and organization of time.

Developing speaking skills is one of the biggest challenges when learning a new language. People often feel intimidated about pronunciation, vocalization and fluency; however, these aspects can be easily improved by autonomous learning and by taking advantage of the resources that technology offers.

LECTURING

A lecture is an oral presentation which aims to give information about a certain topic. If done well, it creates such an impact on listener’s mind which could influence their beliefs, attitudes, intentions, motivations or behaviors. This is what in Rhetoric is known as persuasion. Lecturing is essential in a second language learning process, though at the beginning it is one of the most challenging yet difficult experiences learners have to face. So, the immediate objective of this presentation is to encourage you, first semester students of English Language, to accept right now the challenge of developing lecturing skills rather than to restrain yourselves from it. Mainly with the use of experiences and technical information you could get the important points of what a lecture is made for. Above all, lecturing is an ability that can be learnt. But just as you do not learn to ride a bicycle by watching others doing it, you do not learn how to present a lecture just by attending to a magical number of them.  In the end, you will understand that what actually matters is not your words, but how you make the listener feel.

HOW TO APPLY YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF ENGLISH IN REAL LIFE

One of the greatest difficulties that foreign English learners present is to put into practice the knowledge they acquire of English. It has been proved that, when learning a second language, the quantity of elements that learners are able to understand, both by reading or listening, is much greater than the quantity of elements they can produce, both by writing and speaking. This problem owes its origin to the classic methods of learning English that focus their techniques on listening to audios and reading texts, rather than on practicing speaking to someone and writing texts. One accurate solution for this issue is to provide the methods for learning English with spaces for constant practicing of the production abilities.

HOW LISTENING IMPROVES YOUR SPEAKING

Listening different media sources not only helps you to improve your listening skill, but also helps you to learn from different topics, depending on the media you use, and also to improve the way you speak. Your pronunciation is improved incredibly when you listen carefully.
