LECTURING

A lecture is an oral presentation which aims to give information about a certain topic. If done well, it creates such an impact on listener’s mind which could influence their beliefs, attitudes, intentions, motivations or behaviors. This is what in Rhetoric is known as persuasion. Lecturing is essential in a second language learning process, though at the beginning it is one of the most challenging yet difficult experiences learners have to face. So, the immediate objective of this presentation is to encourage you, first semester students of English Language, to accept right now the challenge of developing lecturing skills rather than to restrain yourselves from it. Mainly with the use of experiences and technical information you could get the important points of what a lecture is made for. Above all, lecturing is an ability that can be learnt. But just as you do not learn to ride a bicycle by watching others doing it, you do not learn how to present a lecture just by attending to a magical number of them.  In the end, you will understand that what actually matters is not your words, but how you make the listener feel.
